EXILE would like to program an event that will merge food and print culture. This Edible Zine Fair will be engaging, participatory, free and open to all.
A zine is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier. Zines are small DIY publications that are easy to produce, accessible, and democratic. Anyone can make a zine! There are zines about every subject under the sun from fanzines about music and dogs, to zines about climate change, the color gold, vegan cooking, gay identity, body positivity, and bikes.
Between 40-50 artists will participate in the first ever Edible Zine Fair! Each table will feature zines that are focused on food but span a wide range of topics. This zine fair will explore culinary delights and tropical fruits as well as issues concerning food consumption, cooking, labor practice, recipes, ingredients and history.
The audience is invited to touch, smell, and in some cases even taste the zines! Artists will trade, sell, and share their zines with each other and are asked to provide a recipe page for the collaborative fair zine which is given away to attendees. Fair goers can collect these pages from each table and build a special recipe book, which EXILE will bind together on site.
University of Miami’s Special Collections will provide an exhibition displaying the history of food focused zines and there will be several activations throughout the day. Local food trucks and restaurants will be invited as vendors.
