We would like to create our own arts project to showcase Waminda Community House.
This humble brown brick building quietly serves a diverse community by hosting small projects such as the homework help club, Grow Mental Wellbeing and a little community garden. Hocus Youth Group was a hit in 2019 too and we share space with visiting health services including the Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health Service.
But now Waminda Community House has a new idea cooking. We would like to give the place a bit of a shake up. We would like to celebrate the diversity of our community. We would like to brighten up the brown with our own Street Art - colourfully and collectively created from design to end stage. It is our hope that the young people of our community will gather, dream and direct the imagery which will grace our outdoor spaces - invigorating this important little hub with many hues to reflect the many faces of Waminda.
The project will be collaborative, harnessing the talents of local artists and local young people from the mural design stage right through to completion. This will be a chance to hang out, laugh, share stories from the street and to harvest the hopes of a group of kids who don't usually fit into the mainstream.
As Waminda relies on grants and donations to run any of our projects, it is especially important to us to find community collaborators too. With this in mind, we are calling in our volunteers to help up-skill our youthful artists. We will be assisting them to prepare shared meals and channel their creativity into multiple avenues as this project unfolds.
When this project goes ahead, there will be a new piece of Street Art to add to Benalla - there will be the Waminda Wall, welcoming community into the caring space of this community hub!
